Q&A with Heather Fraser, Rising Star Winner 2019

Heather FraserThe quality of candidate for Rising Star was so high in 2019, that it was decided to award two winners. We spoke to Heather Fraser about how she felt about winning and attending the event.

How did it feel being a winner at the 2019 awards?

I have never been more proud of myself for winning the award. It goes to show that hard work pays off. It is an honour to be both nominated and recognised.

"Although there are many awards ceremonies, they do not have the gravitas and prestige of Propertymark..."

How did you enjoy the awards event at the House of Lords?

I thoroughly enjoyed the awards ceremony, it was a very special day. I attended with my director Lorraine who I think might have enjoyed it more than me! She won an award last year so she enjoyed plenty of champagne knowing she wouldn't be the one on the stage this time!

What does having a Propertymark Qualification mean to you?

Although there are many awards ceremonies, they do not have the gravitas and prestige of Propertymark, so this was a special one to win.

What would you say to anyone thinking of getting a qualification?

I would encourage them wholeheartedly. It provides you with a personal sense of achievement in addition to the knowledge and skills necessary to confidently carry out your role to the highest standard. We are currently recruiting for staff and seeking candidates with the qualification as we believe it is a reflection of their commitment to the industry and self-development.

"...winning the Rising Star Award has strengthened my position in the company. I have now been selected to take over as manager."

What will being a winner mean for your career?

Our Lettings Manager is leaving the industry this year and winning the Rising Star Award has strengthened my position in the company. I have now been selected to take over as manager. Had I not committed to the qualification, this would not have happened. I have big shoes to fill and I am looking forward to the challenges of further regulation and professionalism of the industry.

What made you choose to study for your Propertymark qualification?

I chose to study for a Propertymark Qualification because the quality of the course materials and support available were of a higher standard compared to other courses available. It was important to me to have proof of my knowledge and something to set me apart from my competitors.

Will you study for another qualification?

I would like to see the Fellow Award that is available in England to be extended to Scotland. But in the meantime I would like to consider the estate agency qualification to gain more experience, particularly in regard to buy-to-let investors.

"Today's learners are the potential future leaders of our industry."

Why do you think it is important to nominate learners for these awards?

Today's learners are the potential future leaders of our industry. It is vitally important that they receive sound training to ensure the practices they instil in future staff are of the highest standards. Receiving such recognition at an early stage in their careers will encourage them to fulfil their potential.

Was studying for your qualification what you expected it to be?

I studied and sat my exams over a few short months. Working full time and also meeting the demands of being a parent to my daughter Bonnie; I had to work to a tightly regimented study schedule. Studying for the qualification at the same time as several of my colleagues also instilled a degree of competition which brought out my very competitive nature. My employer also invested in some additional training from Daryl MacIntosh which we found very helpful.
