Q&A with Katie Wilcox-Smith, Lettings Candidate of the Year 2019

Sean rawsonThe Lettings Candidate of the Year is awarded to the individual who achieves the highest marks across all units in their residential lettings or property management qualification. We spoke to winner Katie Wilcox-Smith on her reaction to the awards.

How did it feel being a winner at the 2019 awards?

Amazing - I wasn't aware of the event until a few weeks prior, so it was an honour in the first place to be invited to the House of Lords, but to win just topped a really great day. To know that so many people took the exam last year and to somehow have come top was a great feeling and made it even more worthwhile.

How did you enjoy the awards event at the House of Lords?

It was a fantastic event, not just to be at such an iconic venue but to meet industry peers from all over the country including Scotland. The Propertymark team are a really fun, friendly bunch too!

"It's a great support to know that I have the knowledge to answer the vast majority of questions that a landlord or tenant may have..."

What does having a Propertymark Qualification mean to you?

Knowledge. It's a great support to know that I have the knowledge to answer the vast majority of questions that a landlord or tenant may have and knowing that I'm providing them with the best advice.

What would you say to anyone thinking of getting a qualification?

Do it! You won't regret having a qualification and [it] stands you in great stead for the future. It's always good for the CV also and to be ahead of the game before it becomes a necessity.

What will being a winner mean for your career?

It's something that I will always have and a great promotional tool for me personally. I find it is becoming more common place now for landlords to ask for a ARLA Propertymark qualified valuation report for mortgage advisers and without the qualification, I couldn't provide this for my clients.

What made you choose to study for your Propertymark qualification?

I've wanted to do it for a few years but it's just making sure you have the time and can dedicate some time to the study which, not having taken exams for a while, I needed to be in the right frame of mind! I wanted to progress and have more knowledge and more importantly the right knowledge, with the constant changes in law and legislation.

Was studying for your qualification what you expected it to be?

I had industry knowledge already so I set myself a goal of getting it completed within 6 months as I like getting things done and not letting things drag on!
