Q&A with Sara Hawkins, Lettings Candidate of the year 2017

Sara HawkinsEach year, Propertymark Qualifications recognises learners who have excelled in their studies, pushing themselves to become the highest performing candidate within their dedicated area. And for the lettings sector last year, that was Payton Jewell Caines' Rentals Director, Sara Hawkins. We caught up with Sara to see what she has been up to over the last 12 months.

So Sara, you were awarded for being the highest performing lettings candidate last year, how does that make you feel?

Sitting at the awards was an achievement and experience in itself, and at no point did I think I would win the category, so when I heard my name called out I had so many emotions; shock, excitement, disbelief, pride, and of course nerves. Even to this day I am so proud of winning this category - it is a memory and achievement that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

How has your day-to-day job changed over the last 12 months?

The last year has been wonderful and the support from my colleagues has been amazing. As a company we have promoted the award within our local markets and my sales colleagues will regularly talk with pride about our rental department being the best, most qualified and knowledgeable in the area when meeting investor clients. It really has had a huge impact, not just on me as an individual, but Payton Jewell Caines as a whole.

Can you fill us in on what you have been up to since the awards last year?

The last 12 months have flown by. The market has been tough with many landlords leaving the sector and tenants having longer term tenancies, thus leaving a shortage of supply, however, winning the award has definitely given PJC as a company an edge, and we have consistently retained an exceptional market share.

Why do you think qualifications are important within the lettings sector?

Qualifications should be essential within our sector. Knowledge of complex lettings legislation is vital in order to manage any portfolio well and there are far too many agents who are not compliant that give good agents a bad reputation. As a company we are proud to say that all our rental department team members have achieved a Level 2 or 3 Propertymark Qualification award, which really adds to our credibility. The relationship between a landlord and their agent should be a long one, built on trust and confidence, and what better way to assure your landlord than having proof of your knowledge with a professional qualification.

What's next for you?

I hope to continue to grow professionally and take our organisation from strength to strength, especially with the challenges ahead such as the fee ban and tax implications on landlords. My commitment and passion within the letting field will always be there - and who knows, there may even be further study ahead……?
